Sausage Gravy Recipe

This sausage gravy recipe is best served with warm, buttery biscuits for a delicious and satisfying southern comfort breakfast that will keep you full way past lunchtime! Sausage gravy, also known as sawmill gravy, is sausage cooked in a roux to form a thick, hearty gravy.

This is a traditional Southern breakfast dish here in the United States. I am from New Jersey so sausage gravy is not something that is typically served anywhere near where I live. I am thankful, however, that this dish is super quick and easy to make at home!

How to make sausage gravy?

Sausage gravy is very simple to make. It can be done in 15 minutes or less! All you have to do is cook the sausage, add flour and milk. I also like to add seasonings to make the gravy more tasty but you can season to your own liking. I don’t add any salt because sausage is salty enough. Again, this is my preference but you can do you.

What do you eat sausage gravy with?

A warm, buttery biscuit is the obvious answer, as it’s the perfect base for this savory, sausage gravy. But you can serve sausage gravy with any or all of your favorite breakfast foods. Some popular options are toast, eggs, breakfast potatoes and buttermilk pancakes.

Can I substitute the sausage in the gravy?

Yes! You can use any kind of sausage for this recipe. You can even use meatless sausage to make a vegetarian gravy. Mushrooms are also another option if you want to make a healthier version of sausage gravy that can taste just as hearty and delicious.
