Puerto Rican Hot Dogs

Puerto Rican Hot Dogs (Hot Dog Boricua)

Puerto Rican hot dogs are piled high with ground beef, onions, mayo-ketchup, and papitas (potato sticks). Other variations may include toppings like sauerkraut, relish and mustard. But the ingredient that stands out, in my opinion, are the onions which are cooked in a savory sauce infused with sofrito, tomato sauce, and ketchup. These hot dogs are next-level delicious!

This Puerto Rican comfort food is super easy to put together on a busy weeknight. I love that this meal is also very kid-friendly. My kids love hot dogs with a side of veggies like carrot and cucumber sticks.

How to make Puerto Rican hot dogs?

Cook the ground beef

Place skillet over medium high heat. Brown your ground beef and remove any excess fat from your skillet. Add sofrito, tomato sauce, bouillon, onions and peppers. Add seasonings and cook for a few minutes until the vegetables become tender.

As for seasoning, I use my homemade adobo and sazón. They can easily be made with spices you probably have in your pantry. Add a little water if the picadillo dries up. Cover and remove from heat.

Cook the onions

Place a skillet over medium high heat. Add a drizzle of olive oil and the sliced onions. Sauté for about 2 minutes. Add sofrito, tomato sauce, ketchup, seasonings, and water. Cook for about 5 minutes or until the onions are soft and the sauce has thickened. Cover and remove from heat.

Cook the hot dogs

I like using Applegate hot dogs. They are free of preservatives, nitrates and nitrites. Add the hot dogs to a pot of boiling water. Cook for 5 minutes. Drain the water.
