Made with Sazón

Homemade Sazón (Sazón Puertorriqueño)

Homemade sazón comes together easily with spices you probably have in your pantry. I love making a batch of sazón Puertorriqueño to have on hand whenever I need it. When stored properly, it can last up to 3 years. But it doesn’t last long in my kitchen because I cook quite often and sazón makes everything taste delicious!

I also make homemade adobo and aceite de achiote (annatto oil) regularly. These pantry staples are so necessary for cooking Latin and Caribbean food.

Homemade Sazón

Is sazón unhealthy?

Sazón is not unhealthy. There are many brands that sell healthy sazón such as Healthy Rican and Loisa. Use my code madewithsazon for 10% off your order at either brand!

Unfortunately, many brands sell sazon that contains harmful ingredients such as additives, fillers, dyes, and MSG. It is best to purchase sazón from trusted brands or just make it at home.

What is sazón made of?

Sazón is mostly made up of annatto, which gives it an orange color. Annatto is an orange-red condiment and food coloring derived from the seeds of the achiote tree, native to tropical parts of the Americas.

Annatto is used to give many foods their yellow or orange color. For example, foods like butter, margarine, and cheese contain annatto. Many other processed foods like Goldfish, Cheetos, and graham crackers also contain annatto. The flavor of annatto is often described as nutty, earthy, and peppery. It is quite mild so the flavor doesn’t overpower most foods, making it ideal for adding color.

Homemade Sazón ingredients:

  • Annatto
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Turmeric
  • Cumin
  • Coriander

How to make homemade sazón?

Add all spices to a mixing bowl and mix until well combined. To achieve a smoother consistency, you may blend the spices in a food processor or sift with a sieve. Use a funnel to pour the sazón into a glass jar. The spice jars I use can be found here! They come with the labels, a funnel, brush and marker which is super convenient.

You may store the rest of the sazón in an air tight container for up to 3 years. TIP: Use 2 teaspoons to substitute 1 sazon packet.
