Caramel apple grapes for Halloween

Caramel Apple Grapes (Easy Recipe)

Caramel apple grapes are really just grapes dipped in caramel and topped with crushed peanuts. They resemble mini caramel apples (adorable!) but there are no actual apples in the recipe. I like to thread the grapes on a lollipop stick which makes them easier to eat. Add Halloween sprinkles for a fun treat your kids will LOVE!

Caramel grapes are also known as taffy grapes in many parts of the U.S. Although taffy grapes are usually made with almond bark or white chocolate instead of caramel. Some people make their own caramel to dip the grapes in but I like melting down caramel chews. It’s easier and more delicious, in my opinion. Warning: these are highly addictive!

What goes good with caramel apple grapes?

Caramel apple grapes are delicious with many different toppings. Aside from chopped nuts some popular options include: sprinkles, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, crushed Oreos, graham cracker crumbs and shredded coconut. You could also be fancy and drizzle with melted chocolate or peanut butter!

These caramel grapes would be a great addition to a Halloween snack board. Check out this fun Halloween snack board I made for my kids! I like to incorporate fruits and veggies as much as possible when making snacks trays for my kids. Adding cute props and food picks make them more fun to eat!

Why does the caramel fall off?

Many ask: why isn’t my caramel sticking to my grapes? The reason may be that your grapes are wet. It’s important to thoroughly wash the grapes and pat them dry with paper towels before threading onto the sticks.

I wash my grapes by rinsing several times with cold water. Then I add them to a large bowl filled with clean, cold water. Add about 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1/4 cup of baking soda. Let that fizz and soak for about 10 minutes or so. Then rinse thoroughly with cold water. This will ensure your grapes are nice and clean!

How to make caramel apple grapes?

My recipe for caramel apple grapes is easy: caramels, milk and peanuts. You could always make your own caramel but I prefer this method. The caramels I like to use for this recipe are Brach’s Milk Maid caramels. They melt down easily and create a nice coating for both apples and grapes!

The caramels come individually wrapped so keep that in mind when planning to make the recipe. You’ll need a bit of extra time to unwrap the caramels but it can be a fun activity to do with your kids.

Add one 10 oz package of caramels to a small saucepan over low heat. Add a bit of milk, about 2 tablespoons at a time. The caramel will begin to melt quickly. Add more milk as necessary until the consistency is smooth. You’ll want it to be a bit runny because if the caramel is too thick, the coating will be too think and will drip off of the grapes. A thin coating is best so that the caramel can stay in place and set more quickly.

If you are dipping grapes individually, try dipping them a little less than halfway. That will ensure the caramel stays in place. If you are threading grapes onto a lollipop stick like I did, dip and twirl the grapes until the excess caramel drips off.

Also, remember to work quickly! You must add your toppings right after you dip, otherwise they won’t stick. If you’ve waited too long and your toppings don’t stick, just pat them on gently. I added crushed peanuts and candy eyes to make them a fun Halloween treat!

How to store caramel apple grapes?

Caramel apple grapes are best when eaten right away but if you have leftovers you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 1-2 days. Alternatively, you could freeze them and enjoy them as a frozen treat. I would keep them about a week in the freezer. Although they’d probably last longer, I wouldn’t want to keep them stored for that long.

Tips:
You’ll want the caramel to be a bit runny because if the caramel is too thick, the coating will be too think and will drip off of the grapes. A thin coating is best so that the caramel can stay in place and set more quickly. To thin out the caramel, just add more milk.
If you are dipping grapes individually, try dipping them a little less than halfway. That will ensure the caramel stays in place.
If you are threading grapes onto a lollipop stick like I did, dip and twirl the grapes until the excess caramel drips off.
If your toppings don’t stick, just pat them on gently.
