Piña Colada (Puerto Rican Pineapple Coconut Cocktail)

Piña colada is a deliciously tropical cocktail made with creamy coconut, pineapple, and a splash of rum. This refreshing cocktail is Puerto Rico’s national drink, perfect for sipping in the summer sun. It comes together easily with just a few ingredients and is a crowd pleaser. What is piña colada’s origin?

Piña coladas originated in Puerto Rico in the mid-1900s. It is said that the drink was first invented at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan around 1954. But since no one patented the cocktail, there is no official legal inventor.

  • Coconut milk
  • Cream of coconut
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Lime
  • White rum
  • Ice

How to make piña colada?

To a blender, add all of the ingredients and blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into glasses and garnish with pineapple slices and maraschino cherries.

Can I make piña colada non-alcoholic?

Yes! When making piña colada, adding rum is optional. You can make a virgin piña colada by omitting the rum. Follow the rest of the recipe as is.

  • 1 Blender see notes

Ingredients
  

  • 1 can coconut milk
  • 1 can cream of coconut Coco Lopez
  • 1 1/2 cups pineapple chunks fresh or frozen
  • 1/2 lime juiced
  • 1/2 cup white rum optional
  • 2-3 cups ice
  • pineapple slices for garnish
  • maraschino cherries for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Add all ingredients to a blender (except the garnishes) and blend until smooth, 1-2 minutes.
  • Pour into glasses and garnish with pineapple slices and maraschino cherries. ¡Buen provecho!
