It is typically served with <em>los tres golpes<\/em> (the three hits) which are fried eggs, fried salami and fried cheese. Also, mang\u00fa is smooth and creamy while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curlsnpearlsss.com\/es\/puerto-rican-mofongo-mashed-fried-plantains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mofongo<\/a><\/strong> is crispy and dense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mang\u00fa is a breakfast dish topped with pickled red onions and served with fried eggs, fried salami and fried cheese. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curlsnpearlsss.com\/es\/puerto-rican-mofongo-mashed-fried-plantains\/\">Mofongo<\/a><\/strong> can be a side dish or main entree served with chicharrones or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curlsnpearlsss.com\/es\/camarones-al-ajillo-garlic-shrimp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">camarones al ajillo<\/a><\/strong> (garlic shrimp).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mang\u00fa ingredients:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Green plantains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Mantequilla<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Red onion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">White Vinegar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Extra virgin olive oil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Sal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*Find the full recipe with measurements at the bottom of this post or click the&nbsp;<em>Jump to Recipe <\/em>button at the top of this page.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to make mang\u00fa:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, thinly slice the red onion. Place the sliced onions in a bowl and add the vinegar and salt, to taste. Set aside. Fill a large pot with water and place it over high heat. Add 1\/2 tbsp of salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peel and cook green plantains<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, prepare the plantains. Start by cutting off both ends of the green plantains and slicing a slit lengthwise down the center.\u00a0Carefully separate the peel by pulling it away from the flesh. Cut each plantain into 4 pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the water comes to a boil, add the plantains and cook for about 15 minutes until fork tender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cook the onions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add oil to a small saucepan over low heat. Add the onions and vinegar while the oil is still cool to avoid splattering. Cook for a few minutes until the onions turn bright pink but still have some crunch to them. Set aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mash the plantains<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once cooked, remove the plantains from the boiling water and place them in a large bowl. Reserve about 1\/2 cup of the boiling water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the plantains are still hot, add some butter, some of the pickled onion juice, and a splash of the reserved water and begin mashing the plantains. Repeat the steps until everything is nice and smooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taste the mang\u00fa and add salt, if necessary. Top with pickled onions and serve with fried eggs, fried salami and fried cheese. Enjoy! \u00a1Buen provecho!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips for making mang\u00fa:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Make sure to use green plantains. Once the plantains start to get dark spots, they start to taste sweet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Reserve some of the water from boiling the plantains. This helps make the mash smooth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Add some of the vinegar from the cooked onions to the mang\u00fa while mashing. This adds tons of flavor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Although you can use a fork or potato masher, an electric hand mixer will yield the smoothest mang\u00fa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Adding\u00a0cold water\u00a0while mashing the plantains\u00a0is a trick that prevents the\u00a0mang\u00fa\u00a0from getting hard and keeps it soft even after it cools down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Make the mang\u00fa a bit thinner than you&#8217;d like. As it cools, it will continue to thicken.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to serve with mang\u00fa?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mang\u00fa is best enjoyed with fried eggs, fried salami and fried cheese. You can also serve with longaniza (sausage) and avocado.
