They are the perfect compliment to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curlsnpearlsss.com\/es\/arroz-blanco-puerto-rican-white-rice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white rice<\/a><\/strong> and are enjoyed in all parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A bowl of stewed beans over rice is a hearty meal on its own and can also be served as a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curlsnpearlsss.com\/es\/category\/food\/side-dishes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">side dish<\/a><\/strong> with pretty much every Latin dish!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do they call beans in Puerto Rico?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In Puerto Rico, we call beans habichuelas. I prefer pink beans but any beans work with this recipe. White beans, red beans, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curlsnpearlsss.com\/es\/puerto-rican-style-black-beans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">black beans<\/a><\/strong> or kidney beans are great as well. We even cook chickpeas, lentils and pigeon peas (gandules) this way and they are absolutely delicious!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to make Puerto Rican beans?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To make Puerto Rican beans, you will need beans of your choice (dry or canned), sofrito, tomato sauce, bouillon, adobo, sazon and other herbs and spices. As for seasoning, I use my homemade\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curlsnpearlsss.com\/es\/homemade-adobo-adobo-puertorriqueno\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adobo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0y\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curlsnpearlsss.com\/es\/homemade-sazon-sazon-puertorriqueno\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saz\u00f3n<\/a><\/strong>. They can easily be made with spices you probably have in your pantry. Once the beans are cooked, I remove the onion and cilantro.&nbsp;Then I mash some beans with calabaza to thicken the broth. Another ingredient I like to add is a pinch of sugar. I learned this from my Dominican friends and I love what it adds to the beans. Since this is the base and where most of the flavor will come from, you will want to use homemade sofrito. Then add the rest of the ingredients, bring to a boil and cover the pot. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 10-15 minutes or until the beans thicken a bit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it better to use dry or canned beans?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Dry beans will always taste better and fresher than canned beans but require more time and preparation. When using dry beans, you will have to soak them in cold water overnight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The next day, rinse them and boil in a pot with fresh water for about 1 hour or so covered, until the beans are tender. You can also add aromatics to the pot like onions, garlic, cilantro, and culantro. Make sure to season the beans with adobo, sazon, and any other spices you prefer. Otherwise, the beans will taste bland later when you stew them. Check on the beans occasionally and stir to avoid them from sticking to the pot and burning.
