Churros are crispy fritters made of choux pastry dough and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. They get their signature shape from being piped into hot oil with a piping bag and star tip. Their ridges give them a crispy exterior with a soft and fluffy interior. This homemade churros recipe is pure perfection!

What is churro batter made of?
Churros are basically made with choux pastry dough, which is a combination of all-purpose flour, butter, water, salt, sugar and eggs. It’s the same dough used to make cream puffs and eclairs. Yum!
Are churros traditionally fried or baked?
Churros are traditionally deep fried in a high temperature oil like vegetable or peanut oil. The best way to make them is to pipe them right into the hot oil.
Alternatively, you could bake them but the churros may not retain their shape. You could try setting the dough in the refrigerator for a while prior to piping, but even then the churros might flatten once baked and cooled.
I recently tried to pipe churros onto a cookie sheet and they completely fell apart. I think the dough hadn’t set and was a bit too soft so they flattened right away. Epic fail!
What piping tip do you use to make churros?
A star tip is what gives churros their signature grooved surface. A 1/4″ star is typically used and will yield churros about 3/4″ in diameter. If you’re looking for thicker, 1″ churros, use a wider star tip.
What to serve with churros?
Churros are typically served with chocolate sauce. However, I recently had them with guava sauce and OMG total game changer! I make homemade guava sauce with fresh guavas, I will link the recipe below! Guavas can be found at any latin supermarket or grocery store. If you don’t live near latin markets, I recommend Instacart.
